The first version was produced in low numbers from 1983 to 1993 and was sold primarily in the USA. In Germany it was only possible to obtain a model through imports, which could also be registered with 17 hp.
From 1993 a new TT 600 was manufactured at the factory of the Italian importer Belgarda. It was more suitable for everyday use than the first two variants from the 80s and sportier than the XT 600, which was offered at the same time. Yamaha officially added the model to the range. Since the TT 600 S ("S" for Sport), which was only equipped with a kickstarter, sold only slowly, from 1994 onwards it was replaced by the sister model TT 600 E with an electric starter and capped spring travel. This was four kilograms heavier because of the starter and battery.
In 1998, the TT 600 R was a sportier new edition with a modified chassis and design; from 2003 this was replaced by the more road-friendly TT 600 RE with an electric starter and again reduced spring travel. In 2005, production of the TT officially ended; the air-cooled and carbureted single-cylinder was no longer considered up-to-date.
