The XT 600 is considered an all-round Enduro, suitable for both on-road and off-road use.

The first XT 600 was introduced in June 1983, the XT 600ZL Ténéré 34L, based on the XT 550 engine, a starter-only engine with a 30 liter white tank. In 1984, the basic XT 600 was introduced to "replace" the XT 550.

The reliability of the XT unit was not affected, as mileage in excess of 100,000 km and an unopened engine is not uncommon.
