The Yamaha XTZ 660 Tenere, a dual-sport adventure motorcycle, was introduced in 1991 as the successor to the aging Yamaha XT600Z Tenere. Initially aimed at European consumers, it was a rarity in the Japanese market. In 1994, the model underwent a slight update, gaining a visual resemblance (in the design of the fairings and instrument panel) to the larger Yamaha XTZ750 Super Tenere. Production of the motorcycle ceased in 1996, although new units were sold until 1999 inclusive.
At the heart of the Yamaha XTZ 660 Tenere lies a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 660 cubic centimeters. This engine produced 48 horsepower and 57 Newton-meters of torque. Models released after the facelift had slightly reduced figures – 46 hp and 56 Nm – which was due to adaptation to new environmental standards. Key features of the engine include a five-valve cylinder head and a dry-sump lubrication system, where the oil is stored in the motorcycle frame.
